The customer's challenge: EV charging without a driveway

The customer didn't have a driveway, so they relied on on-street parking outside their Ramsgate home. As a result, a standard home-charging setup wasn't possible.

Without an appropriate cross pavement EV charging solution, the customer’s main options were to:

• Depend on public EV charging points
• Avoid charging from home
• Delay switching to an electric vehicle
• Attempt to route a cable across the footway

The last option wasn't suitable because an unsecured cable could create a trip hazard or obstruct people using the pavement.

The customer therefore needed a system that could connect the home charger to the vehicle while managing the cable more effectively.

Why SGS Energy recommended a raised EV ChargeArm

Following an assessment of the property and its parking arrangement, SGS Energy recommended a raised CchargeArm.

An EV ChargeArm is mounted at the property and extends towards the parked vehicle. It holds the charging cable above the pavement rather than allowing the cable to rest loosely on the ground.

When charging is complete, the arm can be folded back neatly against the property.

For this installation, the charge arm offered three important benefits:

1. Home EV charging without a driveway: The customer could connect their vehicle to their domestic chargepoint despite relying on on-street parking.
2. A clearer pavement: Supporting the cable overhead kept it off the walking surface and helped avoid the obstruction associated with a loose cable lying across the footway.
3. More convenient overnight charging: The customer gained an alternative to relying entirely on public charging infrastructure and could make better use of home charging when the vehicle was parked within reach.
